There is nothing better than music…. and having it outdoors, that’s why I do love music festivals. One that is dear to my heart is the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in Golden Gate Park / San Francisco. First off its wonderful because its FREE….and that’s the start of the story, its also not sponsored by anyone or anything, no logos and banners all over the grounds, just music in the park.
Its free because of one man and his family, Warren Hellman, who pays for the festival each year. Sadly he passed away a few years back but set it up so the festival will continue for many years to come.
Because of that generosity I believe that’s where the magic of the festival happens….because its free there are ALOT OF PEOPLE who come to the park over the 3 days in October. But in the 10 years I have been going I have never once seen an incident between folks. What do I see? People enjoying themselves, helping and sharing with their “tarp” neighbors, people chatting and making new friends and people taking care of each other….it’s all about music and community. And with that many people, and with music of all genres which attracts a wide variety of people I think its a rare thing to find in this world…I have a few theories on why this happens but I just want to believe when people do good things and have good intentions, good things happen because of it….it’s simple really : )
I’m thankful every year I get to attend and never take for granted my time in the park, the people I meet and interact with, the music and the feeling you get when everyone gets it and is on the same page and has the same mission, when was the last time you can say you have felt that way?
